Mission:

The Glacier Institute serves adults and children as an educational leader in the Crown of the Continent ecosystem with Glacier National Park and Flathead National Forest at its center. Emphasizing field based learning experiences, the Institute provides an objective and science-based understanding of the area’s ecology and its interaction with people. Through this non-advocacy approach to outdoor education, participants can be better prepared to make informed and constructive decisions which impact this and other ecosystems.

Our Campuses:

The Glacier Institute operates two residential facilities through cooperative agreements with the Flathead National Forest and Glacier National Park. Most of our youth programs take place at the Big Creek Outdoor Education Center, a historic Flathead National Forest Ranger Station, which is located along the Wild and Scenic North Fork of the Flathead River adjacent to Glacier National Park. Many of our adult programs are based at Glacier Park Field Camp, a National Park Service facility, operated by The Glacier Institute, which is located just inside the West Glacier entrance of Glacier National Park. Our administrative office is located at 137 Main Street in Kalispell.

Discovery School:

The Discovery School is a hands on, field based science program designed for K-12th grade students. Annually, the Big Creek Outdoor Education Center hosts more than 1,200 students from local and regional schools. The Discovery School curriculum meets most standards for math and science and students study aquatic ecology, wildlife, forestry and other subjects in Glacier’s backyard. These programs are taught by The Glacier Institute staff who are experienced in providing the best in outdoor environmental education. Corporate donations help make it possible for our youth to experience affordable and unforgettable days at Big Creek.
